Ubud Water Palace: Lotus Ponds, Purple Robes and Night Dances
Lotus pond in the middle of Ubud
Slip off the busy Jl. Suweta and you suddenly face a mirror-still lotus pond, red-and-white stone gateways and the compact outline of Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati – better known as Ubud Water Palace.
This isn’t a sprawling royal compound; most visitors say you can see the accessible area in 5–20 minutes, yet many end up lingering by the water or returning after dark for a show.
Tickets, timings and what’s actually included
Recent reviews put standard entry around 50,000–65,000 IDR per person, with several people in 2025 quoting 60k–65k and noting that prices were once lower or free. One visitor mentioned paying 160k for two.
The fee usually covers a welcome drink, plus mandatory traditional garments – a purple sarong, jacket and often headband – with no extra sarong rental. Some travellers liked that this makes the courtyard look calm and uniform; others were frustrated that the outfits felt cheap or unnecessary for such a small area.
Purple robes, crowds and comfort
Everyone agrees: you must wear the provided clothing to go beyond the gate during the day. Many enjoy the experience of being dressed up in Balinese costume and describe it as fun, colourful and respectful.
But there’s a consistent downside. Several reviews complain that the garments are reused immediately and not washed between visitors, with visible sweat marks on hot days. For hygiene-conscious travellers, this is a serious drawback, and a few said they preferred to admire the palace from Starbucks or the small café outside rather than put them on.
Small space, big expectations
The accessible part of the Water Palace is essentially the front courtyard and lotus pond, with clear signage or staff reminding you that the temple itself is off-limits. Visitors repeatedly point out that you “only access the little front area”, and that the walkways over the ponds and a few throne-like seats are the main photo spots.
Because the space is narrow and framed by water, it crowds quickly. People describe queues for stepping-stone shots, lines spilling onto the sidewalk, and a “Disneyland” or “photo studio” feeling. Those who come right at opening or in the rain report a more peaceful, almost spiritual atmosphere.
Evening shows and a different kind of magic
After 18:30, daytime visits usually end and the courtyard becomes a stage. Multiple guests rave about traditional dance performances – Legong, Barong–Rangda or Ramayana stories – starting around 19:15–19:30, with tickets around 100,000 IDR.
At night, the temple façade is lit, the lotus pond glows and the dancers move between flames and reflections. Some reviewers say this was the highlight of their trip, especially when combined with a cocktail or dinner at the adjacent restaurant, sometimes using a voucher or discount tied to the show ticket.
Touristy or sacred? Depends on you
Reactions split. Many call it a beautiful, peaceful cultural gem and “absolutely worth visiting”, particularly for architecture, lotus flowers and quick photos between browsing Ubud’s shops and market.
Others see it as an overrated tourist trap: small, crowded, commercial, with limited access and staged photo setups. In the end, Ubud Water Palace suits travellers who are happy with a short, photogenic stop or an atmospheric evening dance – rather than those seeking a long, meditative temple visit.
