Quiet Majesty Above Lovina
Setting in the Hills
High on the slopes near Lovina, Brahmavihara-Arama is recognised as Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery. Reviewers describe arriving to find manicured gardens, golden Buddha statues, stupas and a miniature Borobudur — all laid out with a sense of spacious calm. The blend of Balinese ornament and Buddhist symbolism gives the complex its distinctive character.
Getting In & Around
Entry for international visitors is 35,000 IDR, with scooter parking at 2,000 IDR and car parking noted at 5,000 IDR. Sarongs are provided if you arrive in shorts or without long trousers. While most agree the fee is reasonable, one visitor mentioned a 25,000 IDR charge. The grounds are large enough to occupy an unrushed hour; others took only 25 minutes, but linger longer if you wish to meditate or explore every courtyard.
Atmosphere of Stillness
Many accounts from Google and TripAdvisor praise the tranquillity — often there were few other guests, especially at off‑peak times. Even when tour buses arrived, the calm was not lost. One reviewer noted hearing only the sounds of nature while moving through the gardens and dharma halls.
Architecture & Views
The monastery is a “beautiful infusion” of styles, with stupas and retreats set against mountain and ocean panoramas. Built in 1999 yet evoking older forms, the structures invite photography but also quiet contemplation. Seating areas are placed throughout; the upper stupa offers wide views over green hills.
Practical Notes
Reaching the site from Lovina takes around 12–20 minutes by vehicle. Grab or Gojek rides may not be available for a return, so arranging your pick‑up is wise. A countryside road toward the Twin Lakes begins here, but one rider warned of narrow concrete single‑track sections — not advised for beginners.
Verdict
This is a rare peaceful space in Bali, best suited to travellers who value cultural depth and unhurried time amid serene gardens.
