Besakih Great Temple: Bali’s Living Monument
Spiritual Heart of Bali
On the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung, Pura Agung Besakih rises in black volcanic stone, its multi-tiered meru shrines stepping toward the clouds. This “Mother Temple” is more than a millennium old, a sprawling complex of some 23 main temples — and countless smaller shrines — threaded up the hillside.
Visitors speak of layered stone gateways, gardens scented with incense, and down-the-valley views that vanish into the mist. During Odalan or Galungan, the courtyards hum with prayers, bells, and music; at quieter times, the terraces feel hushed and timeless.
Layout and Atmosphere
Pura Penataran Agung is the focal point, with seven ascending levels that symbolise the Balinese cosmos. Not every courtyard is open to non-Hindu visitors, but respectful observation is welcomed. Sarong and sash are required for all, usually provided with your ticket.
From the gate, expect a one-way shuttle or buggy up to the main level, then stone steps the rest of the way. The walk back down passes souvenir stalls clustered along the sloping road.
Costs, Hours and Dress
Recent travellers report entry for foreign adults around IDR 150,000, which typically includes a sarong, a local guide and uphill transport. Tourist access is limited to daylight hours (guides vary reports between 07:00–18:00 and 08:00–17:00). Shoulders and knees must remain covered; women observing menstruation are asked not to enter courtyards.
Guides and the “Extras”
A guide will usually be assigned; reviews are mixed. Some find their companion insightful, personable, and generous with history and photography tips. Others describe rushed routes, hard-sell detours to “friends’” shops, persistent requests for tips, and pressure to buy “mandatory” offerings or paid blessings.
Multiple reviewers stress: offerings are optional unless joining a prayer; tips are at your discretion. Politely declining sales pitches at the entrance and in the courtyards is acceptable.
When to Go
Early morning brings cooler air, fewer crowds, and, if lucky, a clear view of Mount Agung before it clouds over. Afternoons in dry season (April–October) can also be rewarding for the light. Festival days are spectacular but busier, with some restricted access.
What Visitors Say
On the plus side: “One of the best things I’ve done in Bali,” wrote a 2023 guest who lingered for sunset, learned about Hindu traditions, and enjoyed a private tour. Others describe the ceremonies as moving and the scale and artistry as unforgettable.
Less positively, many lament the “commercialisation” — guides angling for tips, vendors asserting false entry requirements, or photographers charging steeply for simple images.
Verdict
For those drawn to Balinese culture, architecture, and living ritual, Besakih rewards the effort to get there. Arrive early, dress respectfully, and manage expectations about the guiding — the grandeur of the site is best appreciated at your own pace.
