Besakih Great Temple – Bali’s Mother Temple on Mount Agung
Perched high on the slopes of Mount Agung in East Bali, Besakih Great Temple is the island’s largest and most sacred Hindu temple complex. Known as the “Mother Temple,” it has been a spiritual focal point for over a thousand years. The complex houses around 23 main temples, including Pura Penataran Agung at its centre, and offers sweeping views over Bali’s lush landscape.
A spectacular setting
The temple rises across several terraces, connected by long stone staircases, with the dramatic peak of Mount Agung as a backdrop. Dark volcanic stone structures topped with tiered meru spires reflect traditional Balinese architecture, and ornate gateways lead into successive courtyards. On clear mornings, visitors can catch breathtaking panoramas stretching across the island.
Everything to experience Bali’s spiritual heart
Guests buy tickets at the main car park, which generally include a sarong rental, a one-way shuttle up to the temple gate, and a local guide. The tour usually takes 1–3 hours, covering several shrines and courtyards. Some areas are reserved for Hindu worshippers, but if you wish to join a prayer or ceremony, you may need to prepare an offering. The site hosts annual religious festivals, including its temple anniversary (Odalan), drawing thousands of devotees.
Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, and be ready for many steps – the complex is set on a steep slope. Facilities include parking, souvenir stalls, and photo services, though return transport downhill is often on foot.
Customer reviews
Visitors praise the temple’s beauty, cultural significance and mountain setting, often calling it a must-see in Bali. Many enjoyed learning about Balinese Hinduism from friendly, knowledgeable guides, and some found attending during a festival especially moving. Others reported negative aspects: aggressive vendors, pressure to buy offerings or souvenirs, and guides rushing tours or demanding tips despite being included in the ticket price. Some felt the experience was overly commercialised, and noted that most inner sanctums are closed to non-Hindus. The one-way shuttle, with a walk back through souvenir stalls, was also mentioned as inconvenient.
Our advice
Besakih is ideal for travellers interested in Balinese culture, religion, and architecture. Arriving early in the morning avoids crowds and lets you enjoy clearer views of Mount Agung. Bring cash for tickets and optional purchases, and be prepared to politely refuse persistent sales offers. While the organised guide system is part of the visit, you can request to explore at your own pace if preferred. The site’s scale, history and setting make it worth at least one visit, especially when combined with other East Bali highlights.
