Bali’s Bat Cave Temple
A Living Temple Beside the Sea
On the main road through Pesinggahan village in East Bali, Pura Goa Lawah unfolds as both place of worship and natural wonder. Built in the 11th century and attributed to Mpu Kuturan, this small yet significant temple embraces the mouth of a cave inhabited by thousands of fruit bats. The scent of incense mingles with the salty air from the coast opposite, while daily offerings and ceremonies carry on around the cave’s dark entrance.
Bats at Dusk
From the courtyard you can hear the rustle and calls of the colony overhead, but the full spectacle comes in the early evening. Around 18:00–19:00, waves of bats pour out over the shrines toward the sea and surrounding hills. Visitors writing in 2023–2024 suggest arriving about half an hour before, to watch ceremonies and then the night flight.
Practicalities and Dress
Most travellers report paying IDR 25,000–30,000 per adult plus IDR 5,000 for mandatory sarong rental, with small additional fees for parking (motorbike 2,000; car 5,000). Cash only, in small notes. Women should cover knees and shoulders; sarong and sash are required for all. The cave itself is off-limits, but the entrance is clearly visible. Allow 30–60 minutes unless staying for sunset.
What You’ll See
Pass the split stone gate into tiered courtyards of pavilions, shrines and carved statuary. During piodalan (every 210 days) and other holy days, processions of worshippers in ceremonial dress fill the space with music, chanting and colour. The bats, considered sacred, hang in dense clusters over the inner shrines; snakes are sometimes glimpsed inside.
Vendor Encounters
Several visitors praised the kindness of on‑site attendants who help tie sarongs and explain temple etiquette. Others warned about aggressive souvenir selling in the parking area—often involving “free” necklaces or overpriced sarongs. Sarongs at the ticket counter are inexpensive; decline parking‑lot offers politely and firmly.
Tips from Fellow Travellers
Many recommend visiting early morning for a quiet look at daily rituals, or timing a late‑afternoon stop on a wider East Bali circuit to catch sunset and bats in flight. Bring mosquito repellent, water, and respect for active worship. Toilets and small stalls are available outside; facilities are basic.
Goa Lawah rewards those interested in the intersection of nature and spirituality, and suits a short cultural stop en route to Bali’s eastern temples or beaches.
