Life Inside the Gates
Behind those uniform gates, residents cook fragrant meals, invite guests to glimpse their shrines, or sell homemade snacks and crafts. You might try fried fish in a courtyard café, herbal loloh cem-cem, or even durian from a specific house. Many homes rent traditional clothing — often 50–75k IDR — for photos. Bamboo Forest Detour
North of the main street, 40-plus hectares of protected bamboo offer shaded paths and small cafés. Some enjoy it more than the village during busy hours, as entry there is free. A newer market area inside uses quirky “bamboo coins.”

Opening times vary slightly by source but are generally 08:00–17:00 or later; closed for Nyepi. Foreign adult entry is often quoted at 50,000 IDR, domestic at 15–25k. Parking sits outside the gate (about 2k IDR for scooters, 5k for cars). No public transport reaches here; most come by car, driver, or scooter from Ubud (30–45 min) or Denpasar (1.5–2 hrs).

The village sees heavy midday and holiday visitations. Reviews repeatedly recommend mornings — between 8:00 and 10:00 — or late afternoons for softer light and fewer people. Visiting during Galungan or Kuningan adds ornate penjor decorations along the lane, and with them, larger crowds.
