In the centre of Ubud, where Jalan Raya Ubud meets Monkey Forest Road, the weathered gates of Puri Saren Agung open to a modest but storied courtyard. At about 19:30 nightly, the courtyard becomes a stage for traditional Balinese dances – Legong, Ramayana, Barong and trance performances – accompanied by live gamelan. Tickets are commonly IDR 100,000 per person, cash only. Several TripAdvisor reviewers urge arriving 30–45 minutes early for a seat; latecomers may stand or sit on mats up front. Shows last roughly 60–90 minutes and are often singled out as the most memorable reason to visit.
What to Expect
The experience is as much about atmosphere as scale. Some travellers find the open areas small and crowded in peak hours, with heavy traffic immediately outside; others appreciate the craftsmanship and central location opposite Ubud Art Market. Dance nights can be packed, but the intricate costumes, stylised movement and music still win over most culture‑minded visitors.
Visitor Tips
Dress respectfully, especially if ceremonies are in progress; sarongs are sold nearby. Keep an eye out for canang – the daily leaf-and-flower offerings – on the ground. For quieter photos, come at opening time. Mobility access is limited by uneven paving and steps. Car parking is usually at Ubud Central Parking (~IDR 10,000); scooters sometimes park free closer by.
