Most guests describe the atmosphere as peaceful and refreshing, with ceiling fans keeping things comfortable and a garden full of tropical plants and even some well-groomed cats and dogs wandering around. Several reviewers say it’s their “go to” breakfast spot in Ubud for a quiet morning with a rice-field view.
Coffee, breakfast deals and French toast praise
Coffee is a daily draw here: lattes, piccolos and basic brews come up often. One visitor loved that their café latte was “not sour at all”; another found the coffee just “ok” but still fine alongside brunch.
Breakfast is a strong suit. There’s an 85K breakfast special that multiple people flag as good value, plus dishes built around eggs and sourdough (even if one reviewer argues the bread doesn’t meet true sourdough standards). The French toast is singled out as “literally the best” some guests have ever had, and there are shout-outs for pancakes and hash browns, too.
Bowls, panini and ‘boujee’ plates
Beyond breakfast, the menu leans into healthy-but-indulgent café food: smoothie bowls that some guests call “so so good”, poke bowls, grilled tuna salad, chicken pesto panini, fish and chips, and fitness-style plates like the “Fitness Junkie” option.
Portions are generally described as generous and good value for the Tebongkang area, with many visitors spending around 100k IDR for brunch with coffee. Still, the earlier analysis notes smaller portions for dishes like Mac & Cheese and occasional smoothie bowls that are too liquid, so consistency may vary.
Service, wait times and little touches
Staff are widely praised as friendly, attentive and English-speaking. Several reviews from 2024-style platforms mention warm, genuine service and little gestures like bringing chips if the kitchen is running slow or even helping carry guests’ bags.
Not every experience is smooth, though. At least one guest reports their order being forgotten, leading to a wait of over an hour in an almost-empty café; they did receive a discount, but left disappointed by the delay.
View, work-friendly space and practicalities
Section 9 is laid out with plenty of outdoor seating under a roof, sockets near many tables for laptops, and a steady breeze over the fields, making it attractive for digital nomads or anyone wanting to work over a latte. Parking is described as spacious, and prices “reasonable but rather touristy”.
Several reviewers say this became their favourite place in Ubud, visiting weekly for the combination of food, view and calm. A few, however, find the food “very normal” and not aligned with the high ratings.
Reputation questions and online invisibility
Behind the glowing comments, the earlier market analysis flags a serious concern: reports that Section 9 has offered a 10% discount in exchange for an immediate 5-star review, and refused the discount for a lower rating. If accurate, this practice would artificially inflate the roughly 4.6/5 average and may explain why some diners feel the food doesn’t match the hype.
Digital presence is surprisingly weak: there’s no clear standalone website, and the café seems to sit inside a Wix portfolio linked to a local group that also runs Maku Healthy Cafe. Social media accounts are hard to identify, so most discovery appears to come from foot traffic and search-platform reviews.
For travellers, Section 9 makes most sense as a relaxed, rice-field café stop for breakfast or coffee, especially if you value atmosphere and friendly service more than cutting-edge cuisine or perfectly transparent ratings.
