Manta Point, Nusa Penida: Magic, Chaos and Manta Rays
Cliff Views, Open Ocean and Giant Rays
Perched off Batukandik in Nusa Penida, Manta Point is both a dramatic clifftop viewpoint and an offshore cleaning station where manta rays circle in clear blue water. Visitors describe the experience as unforgettable when it all comes together: warm or sometimes very cold water in the low 20s, 10–17 m depths, and mantas gliding just a few metres away.
From the cliffs, some travellers drive roughly 30 km across the island on terrible, dangerous roads just for the view, finding a quiet, almost deserted spot with no shops, no security and, often, no rays in sight. It’s stunning for photos, but several reviews say you should not expect more than scenery if you come only by land.
Snorkelling & Diving at the Cleaning Station
Most people experience Manta Point by boat: 45 min each way on typical tours, sometimes as part of a 3‑hour outing or a longer “Snorkelling & Land Trip” package. Boats usually carry 12–20 people, and many tours combine other sites such as Gamet Bay, Crystal Bay or Mangrove Point.
Underwater, the manta rays can be spectacular. Divers and snorkellers report seeing 4–15 mantas at once, sometimes “hundreds” from the boat, circling a shallow 3–4 m reef used as a cleaning station. Guides often say the chance of sightings here is 80–90% compared with 20% at Manta Bay, and some guests feel that extra 500k vs 300k IDR price tag is worth it.
Crowds, Chaos and Safety Concerns
Crowding is the biggest recurring complaint. Multiple reviewers talk about 10–20 boats at once, over 100 snorkellers and dozens of divers focused on a tiny patch of reef. People describe getting kicked, pushed, or even having panic attacks as currents sweep groups around.
Strong waves and rough seas are common. Some call the crossing “the worst and most frightening boat ride” they’ve had, with boats lifting 1–2 m off waves and slamming down, and many passengers vomiting. Several guests warn that this trip is not for those with seasickness, weak swimming skills, or fear of open ocean.
Wildlife Ethics and Environmental Impact
A number of recent visitors express deep concern about animal welfare. They describe snorkellers diving down to pose with mantas at the cleaning station, stressing the animals that are just trying to feed or be cleaned. Others mention mantas scarred or hooked, and guides who prioritise close‑up encounters over distance.
Plastic pollution is another sore point. Some reviews speak of “trash everywhere”, zero visibility on bad days, and a sense that overtourism and lack of regulation are harming both island and wildlife. Environmentally minded travellers suggest skipping tours altogether until conditions improve, or at least refusing to touch the animals and packing out all waste.
Manta Tour Transport: Mixed Tour Experiences
Manta Tour Transport, an operator using the site’s name, receives very mixed feedback in the reviews. On the positive side, some guests praise friendly drivers, helpful staff, and solid guiding for nervous swimmers, with equipment and life jackets provided.
Others recount long waits (such as an extra hour at the harbour), dirty gear, unorganised schedules and unkept promises about GoPro footage, towels or the number of beaches visited. A few call their 2.7m rupiah “Snorkelling & Land Trip” the worst, most expensive disappointment of their Bali stay, citing dangerous sea conditions, no manta sightings and only one of three promised beaches.
Timing, Expectations and Who It Suits
Timing shapes everything here. Some visitors who arrived around 3 pm or on rough, cloudy days found the site almost empty and had peaceful swims with 3–15 mantas and just one other boat. Others who came on 8 am peak tours describe “People Point” with 15–20 boats and 200+ people in the water.
For confident swimmers and divers who accept crowds, long bumpy crossings and the risk of seeing nothing, Manta Point can still deliver a powerful, once‑in‑a‑trip wildlife moment; for those sensitive to overtourism, animal welfare and sea conditions, it may feel more distressing than magical.
