Atuh Beach
Atuh Beach
Cliffs, sand, and first light
On Nusa Penida’s east coast, Atuh Beach sits below steep limestone walls in Pejukutan, with pale sand, turquoise water, and offshore rock formations including the arch-like Batu Melawang or Batu Bolong. It faces east, so early morning is the sweet spot; several guides suggest arriving around 5:15–5:30 AM for sunrise, softer light, and fewer people.
Getting there
Reaching the beach takes some effort. From Bali, fast boats from Sanur, Padang Bai, or Kusamba usually take 30 to 45 minutes to Nusa Penida, then the drive from Banjar Nyuh, Toyapakeh, or Sampalan is about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Roads can be narrow, steep, and rough in places, so the guide notes a car with local driver as the safer option for many visitors.
The stairway down
From the parking area, expect a descent of about 10 to 20 minutes via a steep staircase or footpath, with several sources mentioning roughly 165 to 180 steps. Reviewers consistently say the climb back up is the real test, especially in the heat; a few specifically warn it is not suitable for people with knee, balance, or mobility issues, and not ideal for small children. Proper shoes matter more than flip-flops.
Water, tide, and caution
Atuh is often described as calmer and more usable than nearby Diamond Beach, and some reviewers found the water clear and gentle enough for a relaxed swim. Still, the guidance is careful: there are no lifeguards, currents and swell can change quickly, and rocks or dead coral can make the swimming area tricky. Low tide may reveal rock pools, while higher tide can make the bay look more inviting; for swimming, calm sea plus favourable tide matters more than any fixed rule.
Warungs and small fees
Facilities are simple but useful: parking area, small warungs, cold drinks, coconuts, snacks, simple meals such as nasi goreng, basic toilets, and sometimes loungers, beanbags, or umbrellas. Fees vary, with a combined Atuh Beach + Diamond Beach ticket commonly cited at around IDR 10,000 to 45,000 per person, plus parking of around IDR 5,000 for a scooter or IDR 10,000 for a car. A few reviewers complained about extra charges for swings, sunbeds, or access points, so bringing cash in small denominations and using the main entrance seems wise.
Near Diamond, but quieter
Atuh is usually paired with Diamond Beach, Rumah Pohon Tree House, and the Thousand Islands / Raja Lima viewpoint, all in the same east-coast cluster. Review patterns lean strongly toward the same conclusion: people love the peaceful feel, the white sand, and the cliff-framed bay, but many also mention steep access, midday heat, and occasional crowding from day tours.
Come early, wear proper shoes, and go if you want a quieter east-coast beach with striking views and don’t mind earning it on the stairs.
