Guyangan Waterfall’s Blue Stairs and Cliff Temple
Blue Stairs Above the Roaring Sea
High on Nusa Penida’s south‑west cliffs, Guyangan (also called Peguyangan) feels more like a pilgrimage than a quick photo stop. From the parking area near 6G99+FRR in Batukandik, a set of bright blue metal stairs drops roughly 150 m down the cliff face, with the Indian Ocean hammering the rocks below.
Visitors on Google in 2024–2025 call the views “absolutely stunning” and “hair raising” at the same time – a mix of open sea, crashing waves and steep, exposed steps.
Getting There and First Impressions
The GPS point and address listed for Guyangan are accurate, but several reviewers describe the site as “a bit difficult to locate” and recommend setting directions “by car instead of bike” for safety. At the parking area, expect a small fee: many reports mention 5 000 IDR for parking, plus an extra payment at the entrance.
This is not a developed resort: there’s no official website, no formal social channels, and information tends to come from Google Maps, travel blogs and tour operators.
Stairs, Heights and the Physical Challenge
The descent takes about 20–30 minutes each way, down narrow blue metal stairs bolted to the rock. Reviewers repeatedly describe them as “dangerous stairs”, “a little sketchy”, with gaps between steps where you see straight down to the waves.
Most agree that the hike is exhausting and not suited to anyone with poor fitness, knee issues, or fear of heights. Going up after sundown is strongly discouraged because there is little to no lighting and you need both eyesight and hands to place your feet securely.
Temple, Holy Water and What’s Actually at the Bottom
Despite the name, this is not a towering cascade. Several visitors remark that “waterfalls are a bit of an overstatement”: you reach a cliffside water temple (described as a Ganesha temple and water temple) where holy water flows from spouts.
Those who make it down speak of “cool clean water to cool yourself down” and a powerful atmosphere from waves, spray and prayer spaces sharing the same ledge.
Natural Pools and Recent Damage
Older reviews talked about small natural infinity pools by the sea, but multiple 2024–2025 visitors report serious damage. Several say “the road going down has collapsed” and that “access to the pool has collapsed into the waves”, with fences or blocked paths.
Crucially, a recurring complaint is that staff at the ticket counter still charge entrance while not warning guests that the pools and even the waterfall view are currently inaccessible.
Sarongs, Costs and Local Dynamics
As a sacred site, sarongs are expected. Some travellers mention “small payment for parking and entrance” and additional sarong rental, sometimes with pushy tactics near the parking area.
A few describe it as “just another place for losing money renting a Sarong”, especially now that the pools are closed. Others, however, felt the modest fees were acceptable for the experience.
Risk, Rewards and Who It Suits
Reviews split sharply. For some, Guyangan is “the most hair raising experience of Nusa Penida” and a less crowded, almost private alternative to the island’s busier viewpoints, especially in the afternoon.
For others, with the cliff path and final section collapsed, the steep, unstable stairs are “not really worth going anymore” given that “even the waterfall is not visible”.
In its current state, Guyangan best suits confident, fit travellers who value raw cliffs, spiritual sites and vertigo‑inducing stairs more than swimming or comfort; risk‑averse visitors and those seeking an easy waterfall day may want to choose a different stop.
