Stone faces in the jungle

A short ride from Ubud, down Jalan Sumampan in Kemenuh, a modest ticket booth and rice fields hide a very different kind of waterfall. Sumampan isn’t only about rushing water; its character comes from the carved faces and figures that stare out from mossy rock walls along the river.

Most visitors mention an entrance fee of 20 000 IDR, with parking free or very cheap near small local cafés. Opening hours tend to run roughly 06h00–18h00, though the payment booth usually starts later in the morning.

Getting there and heading down

From the parking area, expect about 5–10 minutes on foot through farmland and forest before you meet the main staircase. Reviews from 2023–2024 describe the route as short but quite steep, with 50–60 uneven stone steps and loose handrails in places.

Several visitors warn that the stairs and rocks become extremely slippery after rain, and those with a fear of heights or young children may find the descent tricky. Water shoes or solid trainers are often recommended over tongs or flimsy sandals.

Waterfall, river and current

At the bottom, you reach a broad, man-made spillway waterfall that’s part of the local water management and irrigation system, not a wild cascade. People regularly wade into the river, cross with the help of a rope and stand under the falling water, though more than one reviewer notes a strong current and fast, sometimes muddy flow.

Depth is reported around 0.8 meters in places, with rounded river rocks you can’t always see under the surface, so crossing slowly and carefully is essential. A few visitors arrived to find the dam closed and “almost no water falling”, and one notes that staff did warn them at the ticket booth that the flow was shut off.

Carvings, atmosphere and wildlife

What makes Sumampan stand out are the sculpted figures etched into the cliff and boulders along the river. Travelers describe “lots of carved figure in wall”, mossy statues beside and even under the waterfall, and a decorated rock wall that turns the gorge into an open-air gallery.

Some visitors talk about a sacred, spiritual feeling, with the sound of water echoing through a narrow valley and occasional monkeys playing upstream. For many, it’s this mix of jungle, art and quiet that earns the site “hidden gem” status.

Facilities, cafés and crowds

Infrastructure remains basic: steep stairs, simple paths and limited safety measures, with no formal website or official social media to announce closures or high water. A few reviewers mention no infrastructure at all beyond the trail.

At the top, however, several small cafés and restaurants serve cheap fried rice, local dishes and drinks; some accept card and one has a shower at the trailhead. Visitors repeatedly praise the relaxed mood, friendly staff and the fact that there are often only a handful of people at the falls, even in early afternoon.

Is it worth your time?

Opinions split: some call it “a real stunner” and one of the best quiet spots near Ubud; others feel the man-made spillway and variable water flow make it skippable if you’re short on time. Sumampan Waterfall suits travelers who value atmosphere, carvings and calm over dramatic turquoise pools, and who don’t mind a steep, occasionally risky descent to earn their jungle art fix.
