High on the Caldera

Set on Jl. Raya Kintamani in Batur Selatan, Pura Ulun Danu Batur feels tied to both mountain and water. This is a revered Hindu site with 9 temples and 285 shrines and pavilions, dedicated to water deities and especially associated with Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and water.

The setting matters as much as the architecture: the temple stands on the rim of Mount Batur’s caldera above Lake Batur, in Kintamani’s cooler uplands.

Fire, Loss, Rebuilding

Its story is inseparable from Mount Batur. The original temple stood nearer the caldera floor by Lake Batur, but eruptions in 1917 and 1926 devastated the area; after the later eruption destroyed the village and much of the complex, the community rebuilt the temple uphill in its present position.

Several notes point to the 11-tiered meru for Dewi Danu as the spiritual anchor of the rebuilt complex, with the broader site largely completed in the 1930s.

Courtyards and Meru Towers

This is not a single shrine but a large temple compound laid out in the classic Balinese sequence of outer courtyard, middle courtyard, and inner sacred area. Inside are split gates, carved stone guardians, an 11-tiered meru, several 9-tiered towers, and hundreds of shrines spread across nine different complexes.

Reviewers consistently call it beautiful and artistic, with plenty to look at once you are through the entrance process. One visitor also mentioned easy parking, though parking is available for a fee.

Tickets, Sarongs, and Street-Level Hassle

Practicalities are where the mood can dip. Reported opening hours vary between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM and 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, while entrance fees in the material range from 35,000 IDR to 50,000 IDR, with 50,000 IDR appearing often in reviews.

Sarong and sash are expected. Several reviewers say a sarong is included with the ticket at 50,000, yet many also describe pressure to buy or rent one anyway, with one review mentioning 300,000 IDR to buy and another 50,000 each to rent. A few also report being steered toward guides and extra tips.

Atmosphere Once Inside

Beyond the ticket counter, the tone changes. Visitors describe carvings, calm inner courtyards, and a strong ritual atmosphere; one traveler came for the Bhumisudha ritual and still valued simply being there, even after the ceremony had ended.

There are trade-offs. Reviews mention heavy noise and traffic in front of the temple, and several warn about aggressive selling around the back, including lava rock drawings. Still, others say that once prepared and firm, they were left in peace to explore.

When It Works Best

Morning or early afternoon is the safest bet given the varying hours, and the brief also notes April to October as the drier period. If you already have a sarong and sash, bring them, carry small cash, and keep expectations focused on the temple rather than the arrival experience.
