Kintamani sits on the rim of the ancient Batur caldera at 1,700 meters, looking down at the active Gunung Batur volcano and the crater lake. The Mount Batur predawn trek — 4am departure, 2-hour ascent — is Bali's most popular outdoor activity and consistently draws crowds. The caldera rim is lined with tourist restaurants with unobstructed views; the food is secondary to the panorama. Most operators combine Kintamani with Ubud as a full-day south Bali tour circuit.
