Mangrove Point: Calm Water, Mixed Impressions
Mangrove lagoon on the edge of Lembongan
Mangrove Point sits at the northern tip of Nusa Lembongan, in the village of Jungutbatu, though it’s often labelled under Nusa Penida in listings. It’s not a single business but a natural zone where many small operators run boat tours, kayak rental and snorkeling trips between about 08h00 and 16h00/17h00, depending on the tides.
Visitors describe stunning mangrove trees, clear water and a memorable transition from shady channels to open ocean, sometimes with Nusa Penida visible in the distance (Google 2024). Others, however, find the approach stressful, with hard-selling touts and poorly maintained access paths.
Mangrove boat tours and pricing reality
Most people experience the forest in small pole boats or canoes. Reports mention standard guided trips of about 20–30 minutes, with many paying around 100,000–150,000 rupiah per person, or 150k for a 30‑minute tour. One review notes being quoted 300k per boat at first, then bargaining down to a lower price.
Experiences range from “short but sweet” to “over in 15 minutes”, so setting expectations matters. Several visitors suggest canoes or kayaks if you want more time and freedom, though shallow water and stronger currents at low tide can make self-paddling stressful.
Kayaks, canoes and quiet paddling
Independent paddlers can rent kayaks for around 150K or 200k for 2 people, sometimes being allowed extra time at no charge. Guests talk about gliding through narrow channels, hearing only birds and the sound of the pole in the water, calling it serene and relaxing.
The area itself is relatively small; some report exploring all accessible parts in about 30 minutes. For some, this feels like a perfect, contained outing; for others, it can feel underwhelming and “nothing much to see beyond the same scenery”.
Snorkeling: coral gardens and currents
Offshore from Mangrove Point lies one of Lembongan’s most talked‑about snorkeling spots. Multiple visitors describe warm, clear water, plenty of coral, colourful reef fish, anemones and frequent turtle sightings, with occasional mentions of a black tip reef shark.
Some snorkel independently, entering from beachside warungs such as Nano Nano Restaurant or near Agung beach club, then drifting with the current and walking back along shore. Others arrive by boat on half‑day trips that include Mangrove Point as the first of several stops.
Conditions are not always gentle. Several reviewers warn about strong currents and the need to time visits for calmer hours, like around 9–10 in the morning, and to watch carefully for tour boats moving through the bay.
Onshore reality: crowds, trash and touts
Experiences on land are sharply divided. Many enjoy quiet drinks or food at local warungs, including spots like Captain bar, and appreciate the chance to simply chill between paddles and snorkel sessions.
Others find the entrance area badly maintained, with garbage, rocks in the road and little in the way of facilities or hygiene. Persistent tour sellers approach as soon as visitors park or step off scooters, which some interpret as high‑pressure and off‑putting.
Pricing confusion adds to the friction: bargaining is expected, but the absence of clear, posted rates leaves a few feeling scammed or tricked by inconsistent quotes.
Who will enjoy Mangrove Point?
Mangrove Point works best if you treat it as a flexible activity zone, not a polished attraction: come for calm paddling, a short nature interlude and strong snorkeling, and choose an operator carefully if service quality and clarity matter to you.
