Keramas Beach: Black Sand, Big Waves, Mixed Impressions
Black sand shoreline on Bali’s quieter coast
On the east coast of Bali, Keramas Beach (Pantai Keramas) stretches out in volcanic black, with waves that crash hard enough to draw professional surfers and major competitions. Access is public and free 24h/24, and many visitors on Google note that you can simply walk in, sit all day, and bring your own snacks and drinks.
Surrounded by warungs, small pubs and the Komune Resort & Beach Club, the beach is less crowded than Kuta or Canggu, yet firmly on the map for surf-focused travellers.
World‑class waves and night surfing
Keramas is consistently described in online surf guides and reviews as a powerful, fast, “barrel” spot suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Waves can reach around 10 feet or higher on good days, and some visitors emphasise that sets can be “super fast” and that the reef at low tide is shallow.
A standout feature is surf at night under powerful lights, typically organised via the nearby Komune Resort. Several reviewers mention sitting in cafés by the beach and watching surfers battle two‑metre waves from morning through to sunset.
Glittering black sand and east‑Bali views
The black volcanic sand is a big part of the appeal. Visitors talk about sand that is “really black and it glitters”, with an unusual texture that’s memorable for photography. Some mention peaceful moments listening to the “roar” of the ocean and watching huge sets from a café, or enjoying dinner in a warung at the entrance with full beach views.
That same black sand, however, absorbs heat; reports from market analysis highlight that walking barefoot at midday can be uncomfortable, and swimming here is not recommended for casual bathers due to strong currents and heavy shorebreak.
Pollution, seasonality and cleanliness
Experiences around cleanliness vary sharply. Some travellers find the beach “relatively clean”, with daily tidying near the resort area. Others, especially those visiting around the rainy season (for example late February), describe it as one of the dirtiest beaches they saw in Bali, with plastic washed up in such volume that “20 dump trucks” wouldn’t suffice.
Several reviews note the smell near river outlets, concern about sewage, and frustrations with rubbish being burned on the beach. At the same time, a few see this as a stark lesson in global waste and recycling rather than a purely local problem.
Cafés, access and the surrounding scene
The shore is lined with warungs, pubs and beach cafés where you can watch sunrise or surf sessions over a drink, and some mention a spa at the main entry point. Komune Resort adds higher‑end facilities and helps keep its frontage cleaner, but some analysis points out that resort prices feel high compared with simple local stalls.
Keramas Beach suits surf‑driven travellers, photographers and anyone curious about Bali’s rawer, less polished coastline more than families looking for gentle swimming and manicured sands.
