A quiet escape five minutes from Ubud traffic

Slip off Jl. Kajeng near No.88 and, within about 5 minutes, the noise of Ubud falls away into a narrow path threading through bright green paddies and palm trees. Kajeng Rice Field is a public rice-field walk, often linked with the Sweet Orange trail and Subak Juwuk Manis, open 24h/24 but best enjoyed between 06h00 and 18h00 when the path is still cool and safely lit.

Path, loop and walking time

Cafés, warungs and a touch of Sweet Orange

Along the way, small cafés and warungs dot the path, including places linked to the well-known Sweet Orange walk. Reviewers mention “lots of cafes along the way” and “a few little places to stop for food and drinks”, ideal for a cold drink or simple meal with a view over the paddies.

Shops selling souvenirs, fruit sellers you can haggle with, villas and small hotels line certain stretches, especially nearer town, and some visitors feel the approach is “busy” with goods nobody really needs.

Calm atmosphere, but mind scooters and footing

Most people come for the calm: a “very peaceful” atmosphere, safe-feeling even for kids and women walking at sunset, with light rain or soft morning sun adding to the mood. Many prefer it to Tegalalang or Campuhan Ridge because it is usually less crowded and feels more personal.

There are trade-offs. The path is narrow (often around 1–1.5 m) and shared with motorbikes heading to villas and homes, so you’ll step aside regularly. A few reviewers also note trash in places and no rubbish bins, so carrying your own waste out is important.

When to go and who will enjoy it most

Early morning or late afternoon bring the best combination of cooler air, fewer people and gentle light for photos. Families, casual walkers and anyone needing a quick green break from Ubud’s traffic will get the most from Kajeng Rice Field, as long as they’re comfortable with mixed scooter traffic and an occasionally rough path.
