Snorkelling the Japanese Ship Wreck Point
Shallow wreck, big underwater world
Just off the stony shore of Banyuning, a small Japanese patrol boat lies between about 2m and 12m deep, close enough that even beginners can fin out from the beach in a few minutes. Reviewers describe colourful soft corals, clouds of fish and clear water, with some saying it rivals better‑known sites nearby.
Families mention spending over two hours in the water, and even first‑timers and 11‑year‑olds manage it comfortably when conditions are calm (Google 2024). Several people highlight turtles, clownfish and dense coral around and beyond the wreck.
Getting in: fees, scams and free access
Access is a little confusing. Many visitors pay around 25k IDR per person at the “main” entrance, which usually includes parking, a drink such as watermelon juice, seating, shower and toilet at a warung on the beach. Others park a few metres or about 1 min further south and walk down for free.
Multiple reviews warn about a first parking lot where people try to sell fake entry tickets or demand payment just to reach the water; one freediver even reports being shoved when he refused. Several guests recommend continuing roughly 100 m further to a calmer parking area where no one pushes tickets.
Stone beach, currents and safety
This is not a soft‑sand stretch. The entire shoreline is big stones and galets, busy with parked fishing boats, so lying out in the sun is uncomfortable and getting in and out can be painful without booties. Many reviewers call water shoes or diving booties “essential”.
Currents vary a lot. Some days there is zero current and relaxed swimming; on others, people note “a bit of current past the shipwreck” or even a very strong rip to the left of the flag. Locals sometimes tell visitors to stay to the right of the flag, and one review mentions several swimmers being swept away and needing help when they ignored that advice.
Best time and crowd patterns
Visibility is often better in the morning, especially before about 10am. Snorkellers who arrive early or at the end of September talk about almost empty water and easy exploring.
By late morning and midday, the scene can change: more jukung boats anchor near the site, and it can feel crowded above the wreck. Some reviewers say the number of boats “kills the vibe”, especially for those who came by boat unnecessarily.
Gear, warungs and what to skip
Basic facilities sit right by the main paid entrance: warungs with cheap Nasi Goreng or Mie Goreng, showers, changing rooms, toilets and simple seating. Visitors report renting fins and a waterproof camera for around IDR 225,000, with photo files later shared via WhatsApp, and say the prices are reasonable.
Many regulars advise skipping boat trips and “diving tours” sold on the beach. The wreck lies only about 10m off shore and 5–7m deep, easy for snorkellers to reach from the beach without a boat; some call those tours a tourist trap.
Who will enjoy it most
Japanese Ship Wreck Point suits confident snorkellers, families with water‑happy kids, freedivers and beginners who don’t mind a rocky beach and a bit of logistical wrangling in exchange for rich coral, shallow wreck scenery and a low‑key village atmosphere.
