Alas Purwo National Park
First Forest, Wild Edges
At the southeastern tip of East Java, Alas Purwo feels less like a tidy attraction and more like a landscape you enter on its own terms. This protected area on the Blambangan Peninsula spans roughly 43,420 hectares—one academic source says 43,320 ha—with lowland forest, savanna, beaches, mangroves, caves, and surf coast facing Bali across the strait.
Its name is often rendered as “First Forest” or “Original Forest,” and that spiritual weight still matters here. Sources note that pilgrims come during Suro for meditation and offerings, especially around caves and sacred sites.
Sadengan and the Animal Hours
For wildlife, Sadengan Savannah is the park’s best-known stop. A watchtower / observation point looks over open grazing ground where visitors may see Javan banteng, rusa deer, and green peafowl, with the best window in early morning or late afternoon.
One reviewer specifically pointed to 15.00–17.30 as a good time to watch banteng gather. Across the research, birders also come for Javan kingfisher, red junglefowl, hornbill, and migratory birds around Segara Anakan from roughly September to November/December.
Surf, Sand, and Turtle Beaches
The park’s most famous shoreline is Plengkung Beach / G-Land, a reef break where waves can reach 5–8 metres. Surf season is typically cited as March to November, and this is firmly a place for experienced surfers, often arriving from Bali by boat.
Elsewhere, Ngagelan Beach is linked to turtle nesting, with four turtle species named in the research: olive ridley, leatherback, hawksbill, and green turtle. A reviewer also mentioned the chance of seeing baby sea turtles, though that should be read as personal experience rather than a guarantee.
Caves, Temples, and Belief
Alas Purwo’s atmosphere is shaped as much by belief as by scenery. Sources describe around 40 to 44 caves, including Goa Istana, plus Pura Luhur / Agung Giri Salaka and old brick remains associated with the Majapahit period.
That sacred layer comes up strongly in the review material too: one visitor wrote about temples still used for ritual and the park’s eerie reputation after 18.00. Another praised the balance of nature, culture, and local wisdom—an idea that matches the wider research.
Getting In, Getting Around
The standard base is Banyuwangi, with a commonly cited route via Rogojampi – Srono – Muncar – Tegaldlimo – Rowobendo / Rawabendo – Alas Purwo. Travel time is typically around 1.5 hours or more, and public transport for the final approach is generally described as poor or nonexistent.
Some areas—Rowobendo, Trianggulasi, Sadengan, Pancur, Ngagelan, and Grajagan / Segara Anakan access points—can be reached by regular vehicle. For G-Land, a 4WD transfer may be required, and outside the surf zone, accommodation is described as minimal or nonexistent.
Hours, Fees, and Expectations
Opening times vary by source: 07:00–16:00, 08:00–16:00 daily, or 24 hours for park access with office-hour ticketing. The safest reading is simple: plan for daytime entry and confirm anything more ambitious locally at +62 333 428675.
Reported entrance fees also vary, but the most consistent figures are IDR 150,000 weekdays and IDR 225,000 weekends for international visitors; one source lists IDR 5,000 for domestic visitors. Alas Purwo will suit wildlife watchers, birders, surfers, and travellers drawn to remote places where strong scenery and strong belief still share the same ground.
