Bali's artisan economy is geographically specialized: Celuk for silver jewelry, Mas for woodcarving, Batuan and Gianyar for traditional Kamasan painting, Sidemen for handwoven songket textiles. Buying directly from village workshops cuts out the resort boutique markup significantly — expect to pay 40–60% less for equivalent quality. Most workshops welcome visitors; the working environment itself is part of the experience. Bargaining is expected; respect the craft by not opening with an insultingly low offer.
