A Painter’s Legacy in the Hills
A few hundred metres from Ubud’s main art market, the Blanco Renaissance Museum rises above the valley in a lush pocket of greenery. Once the home and studio of Spanish-born painter Antonio Blanco, it now holds an extensive collection of his works – rich frames, sensuous forms and vivid detail – as well as a chronological display charting his development. Photography of the paintings is not allowed.
Art Indoors, Birds Outdoors
Several visitors found the garden as memorable as the gallery. Parrots, toucans and even a hornbill are part of the welcome, with staff happy to help guests perch birds on shoulders for photos, always free of charge. The fountain, fish ponds and plantings create a quiet space to cool down after touring indoors.
Entry and Atmosphere
Recent travellers report entry fees around $10 AUD, 55k, or 100k depending on season and timing. Inside, there’s no air conditioning; some found it comfortable in the shaded garden, while others left quickly due to the heat. Crowds are typically light, making it easy to stroll at a leisurely pace.
Layers of Story
Beyond his art, visitors can step into Blanco’s studio and family home, watch films of his life in Bali, and even meet descendants who occasionally offer spontaneous tours. The flamboyant interiors and handmade frames inspire almost as much commentary as the canvases.
Practical Notes
Parking and toilets are available, though there is no wheelchair access. The gift shop may be closed at times. A plant-based restaurant next door serves gelato with valley views, noted by some as a welcome stop after a hot walk.
Verdict
Best suited for those drawn to intimate art spaces where gardens and heritage blur. Expect a blend of sensual paintings, ornate craftsmanship and feathered companions in a relaxed Ubud setting.
